| ,,Why Lesson Plan Why do teachers lesson plan? There are several reasons why teachers plan their lessons. They can be put under three main headings.PracticalThinking about and planning a lesson is the best way to prepare for teaching. During the lesson you will be focused on classroom management and feedback, so you won’t be able to plan as you go along! Planning the lesson means it will be more organized and you will feel more confident when you deliver the lesson. Your children will notice if the lesson is well planned and they will perform better.AccountabilityIt’s a good idea to have a record of your lessons in the form of a plan. Sometimes this is a requirement of the institution you work in. Lesson plans can be shown to school inspectors, other teacher and parents who want to know what has been done in class. It is your proof that you have taken the time to plan the lesson.Professional DevelopmentHaving a lesson plan can help you to evaluate your own teaching and meet objectives for your own professional development. Teachers can also share lesson plans which are successful. They can be stored at your school and re-used to save teachers time and encourage good practice.Lesson Planning TipsTimingThink about timing for activities in terms of what is realistic for your pupils to do and how long they can concentrate on one activity. Shorter activities work well with younger learners at elementary level.Course FitEach of your lessons should follow on from previous ones and relate to the aims of the syllabus. You can link lessons together by recycling language in new contexts.PersonalizationIf you can personalize activities they will be more memorable for your children. Try to introduce contexts which are familiar to them and always ask them questions about themselves and their families when you practice language. AdaptabilityRemember to be flexible with your plan. You can adapt the plan at any point if you feel the children need more time or an extra activity to understand something. There is no point in sticking to your plan if it will not achieve your aim.StagingDesign stages that build on each other to achieve your overall aim. You will need a warmer to introduce the topic, a presentation to give the children a model of the new language, and then at least 2 practice activities. You can wrap up the lesson with a short activity to test the children.Learner TrainingAlways introduce some learner training into your lesson, for example asking the children to use a dictionary. You can also tell them the aim of the lesson at the beginning. If you involve them in the lesson like this they will be more motivated to follow it. "Ouoted from " the British Council | |
